Geographic Information
Australia is the only country in the world that occupies a single continent!
The Australian continent has a land mass of 7.69 million km2, being more or less the same size as the USA less Alaska. The distance from north to south is 3.700 km and a flight between Adelaide and Darwin takes 3 hours 40 minutes. The distance from east to west is 4000 km and a flight between Sydney and Perth takes 5 hours.
The Australian population is 22 million people.
Because the population is very small relative to the size of the country, the Australian Government has been able to create large system of national parks and state forests. The system of national parks extends right across the country, protecting fragile landscapes and animal species and preserving spectacular geological formations from the cities edge to the Outback.
Perfect one day, beautiful the next!
The north of Australia is semi-tropical and has two seasons, a wet season and a dry season.
The west and centre of the country is mostly desert and dry regions, while the east coast has mountains, planes and forests, good rainfall, and extensive land suitable for agriculture.
The island of Tasmania lies of the south east coast of the mainland, and is wet and temperate with enormous areas of original forest.
Flora and Fauna
The Australian continent has been separated from Asia for thousands of years. As a result its flora and fauna are unique in the world.
Since it doesn’t have natural predators apart from the dingo (a native dog), crocodiles and sharks, there is a great variety of marsupials such as the kangaroo, wallabies, possums and platypuses.
It is not difficult to see the wildlife even in Australian cities and of course in the bush areas surrounding them.
