The quality of the education system and the unique living environment make Australia an attractive place to study!
Students come to Australia for many reasons including:
- excellent education system;
- diverse range of courses from school to postgraduate degrees;
- many types of specialist institutions;
- worldwide acceptance of Australian qualifications;
- innovative teaching and learning;
- quality of scientific research;
- support for international students;
- safe environment;
- multicultural society;
- the right to work while studying;
- the ability to apply for a residence visa after you complete your course.
Course and living costs in Australia are often cheaper in Australia compared with many other destinations popular with international students, such as the United Kingdom, Canada, or the USA.
Another major attraction is you can work while studying in Australia and support yourself through your course. With a student visa you can work 20 hours a week during semester and full time during vacations.
If you have a partner and enrol in a Masters level course or higher, your partner will be able to work full time in Australia. This visa represents a significant full time work benefit for your partner. If you enrol in a Masters by research you will also be able to work full time while you are studying.
On completing Australian studies you may be able to apply for a Graduate visa. A Graduate visa allows you and your family to live and work in Australia for 18 months after finishing your Australian studies, and then subject to certain conditions apply for a further provisional or permanent visa.
As an international student, you will be adjusting to a new education system, a new culture and perhaps a new language. To help make it easier for you, Australian institutions provide specific programs. Depending on your institution, these may include:
- airport pick-up and temporary accommodation;orientation program;
- English language classes;
- application and visa assistance;
- an international student association;
- international student advisers;
- accommodation assistance.
Many of the Student Service Offices of the various institutions support international students by facilitating the finding of employment and the necessary formal registrations that allow you to work legally in Australia. You can also access other support programs at your institution such as health services, employment services, essay-writing assistance, and social and sporting clubs.
You must have enough money to pay for travel, tuition and living expenses for yourself, your partner and your dependent children for the duration of your stay in Australia. Depending on your Assessment Level you must either declare or show proof that you can meet the financial requirements while you are in Australia.
You must meet the educational prerequisites of your course and pay the course fee for the first semester of your studies. You will then be issued with a formal Confirmation of Enrolment to include with your visa application. Subsequently course payments are made at the start of each semester.
You must meet certain health requirements and may need to undergo a health examination. The requirements vary based on your length of stay in Australia and the health risks in your home country. You must also have health insurance while in Australia. Health insurance can be provided by obtaining special Overseas Student Health Cover which provides medical and hospital insurance.
