Subclass 190 and 491 visas

Skilled Nominated Permanent (Subclass 190) visa

The New South Wales Government has opened its nomination program to people outside Australia who have certain occupations. These occupations are listed below. We invite you to review the list to see whether your occupation is included.

Requirements:

If you are residing offshore, you must:

1. Have resided offshore for the past three months; and
2. Have a valid skills assessment in your occupation.

You also need to have the correct level of English and pass the visa points test. In some cases, you must have a minimum of three years’ work experience in your occupation.

It is not possible to apply directly for NSW nomination notwithstanding you have an occupation on the NSW offshore or onshore list. NSW has adopted an invitation-based system that means you need to express an interest in applying and then wait to be invited. Not many people are being invited.

In effect the Australian Government is not running an expansive migration program at the moment. This is reflected in the small number of places that are available under the state nomination programs. This may change later in 2022.

Requirements:

If you are residing offshore, you must:

1. Have resided offshore for the past three months; and
2. Have a valid skills assessment in an occupation on a regional list.

People granted a Subclass 491 visa can live, study, and work in a regional area for up to five years, and apply for a permanent visa after three years.

Please be advised the chance of being invited to apply for a Subclass 491 visa are very low.
